Future City
Digital Illustration
I like to think about the possibilities of other life existing in the universe; I mean the universe is a pretty big place so we can’t be the only ones in it, right? I also love to read science articles about the latest discoveries or getting lost in an interesting documentary about evolution. I work with technology every day. I like to tinker and I’d like to think I’m tech savvy, always finding a solution to my everyday problems. I really appreciate the form, function, and complexity of how buildings are designed and constructed. It’s almost as if they’re sculptures on a much bigger scale. Drawing inspiration from my hobbies, I have created the Future City, a digital depiction of what our future may look like on another planet.
I did a lot of research on architectural styles to help me envision what a city in the future would look like. As you can see, I wanted to go with something curved and angular, something that we’re not accustomed to seeing. I started off with drawing sketches of a building, so I would know what kind of architectural style I was going to use. Once I decided on a style, I sketched in other elements to fill the landscape. I had to keep perspective in mind to ensure that buildings were accurately drawn. After many sketches, I moved to digital drawing and drew each building piece by piece. After the buildings were complete, I drew in the background: the seashore, sky, sun, and the two moons. Everything came together quite nicely and better than I expected. I am very proud of this piece and I plan making a series of related illustrations to go with Future City.
