Secrets of the Universe
Layout & Typographic Design
Secrets of the Universe: Exploring Space was a book design project that I had a lot of fun doing. It involved many sketch phases and critiques that allowed me to transform the layout of several sketches into a fine piece of work. The project started off with my logo design, The Quark Press, which is a fictional science journal/magazine. I experimented with a grid system to see how I would design the layout. I made a draft of what a typical spread would look like and then applied a similar format to all other spreads.
Once the basic design was finalized, I extracted text from existing science articles to incorporate into my book and gathered essential images. I pieced everything together and made many iterations and alterations to my compositions until I refined the layout. By the end of the project, I was very satisfied of how my final layout turned out to be. The typography was harmonious, images were well placed, there was just a right amount of space between lines of text, and the cover of the book turned out beautifully. The overall design looks professional and neatly done.
